Why LLM tracking is so expensive (and what you're actually paying for)

LLM brand tracking tools charge serious money, and most of them never explain why. The reason is not greed or padding - it is the underlying process, which is genuinely expensive to run. Once you understand the mechanics, the pricing makes sense. So does knowing when you do not need to pay it.

There is only one way to do this

Every tool on the market - whether it is a specialist LLM analytics product or a feature inside a larger SEO platform - uses the same method to track brand mentions and share of voice in AI responses. There is no proprietary technology here, no secret algorithm. The process is the same for every provider, and once you understand it, the cost structure becomes obvious.

The unit economics of LLM tracking

You define a set of prompts relevant to your brand, your category, and your competitors - anywhere from 100 to 10,000 prompts depending on how comprehensive you want the picture to be. Those prompts are then sent via a multi-model API to every major model: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, and Google's AI surfaces.

That means six or seven full responses come back for every single prompt. Every response gets saved to a database. Every response is read word for word, checking for brand mentions, citation rates, and share of voice relative to competitors. The results get surfaced in a dashboard.

The cost driver is token volume. Each prompt generates six or seven lengthy responses from different models. Each response needs to be stored and analysed. At 500 prompts, a single run costs around $100-$150 in API and compute costs and takes roughly an hour to run. Scale to 1,000 prompts doing a run every day, your looking at thousands of dollars. That's the raw cost of the process, before any SaaS margin, before the team building the product, before the UI you interact with.

Volume is the multiplier here, not the model

Consider the math. A prompt sent to one model returns one response. The same prompt sent to six models returns six responses - each of which needs to be stored, processed, and analysed. If you are running 1,000 prompts, you are not processing 1,000 responses. You are processing 6,000 to 7,000. Multiply that by a daily cadence and the numbers compound fast.

Volume dominates cost even as per-token rates fall. The more prompts you track, the more models you include, and the more frequently you run it - the more expensive it gets, regardless of which model you pick.

Why costs are hard to predict before you are already overspending

Visibility into LLM spend is the core challenge, whether for tracking or for any other application. Pricing is legible in theory: input tokens cost X, output tokens cost Y, and storage and compute sit on top of both. In practice, most people only see the total after it has already accumulated.

Output tokens cost more than input tokens on most models, and LLM responses are verbose by nature. A tracking system collecting six or seven long responses per prompt is generating significant output token volume on every run. Token costs accumulate quickly at this volume, and the total can move faster than expected if you are not watching it closely.

What tracking requires beyond the API calls

Running a meaningful LLM tracking operation also requires infrastructure to log and store every response, compute to run the deterministic analysis across all that text, a scheduling system to trigger runs on a defined cadence, and a layer to present the results in a readable format.

We built that infrastructure to validate this from scratch - using Claude Code, Supabase, Vercel, and cron jobs - and produced results identical to the commercial tools. It took four to five hours. The complexity is real, the cost is real, and the build requires meaningful engineering time to put together and keep running.

How often you need to run it

Daily tracking is overkill for most brands. LLMs do update faster than search engines, but macro trends in brand visibility do not shift day to day. A monthly cadence gives you enough signal to identify where you are cited and what content to prioritise next.
