Your computer gets an agent
Two launches this week put AI agents straight onto the machine you already work from. If you run content on your own, that's the most useful news of the week, even if it wasn't the loudest.
On 14 September, Perplexity and Nvidia brought Portable Computer to Windows. It's the local version of Perplexity Computer, the company's agent for multistep tasks, and it runs on your own PC using an Nvidia RTX graphics card. Nvidia pitches it as a way to run agent workflows without spending cloud credits, and Tom's Hardware reports it connects to Word, Google Drive, Gmail, Slack and GitHub, with scheduled recurring tasks built in.
Three days later, Meta put Muse on the Mac. Muse can work with your files, messages, calendar, notes and mail inside their own apps. Access is opt-in, and Meta says it always asks before doing anything sensitive. The Mac app follows the mobile and web launch earlier in September.
What this means for a one-person content operation
Content work is mostly admin with some writing in the middle. You dig out last month's interview notes, pull a client's feedback out of a long thread, file the draft and put the publish date in the calendar. Desktop agents are built for exactly that part of the job, and it's the part that eats your mornings.
The writing is a different job. An agent that can read your inbox doesn't know your voice, your rules or which claims you can stand behind, so keep those in the system you write with.
The limits
Portable Computer has a steep hardware bar. You need a GeForce RTX or RTX PRO card with at least 24GB of video memory, and Tom's Hardware reports you also need a Pro or Max Perplexity subscription. That puts it in high-end gaming or workstation territory. Reports also disagree on which local model Windows machines get, so check in the app before you plan around it.
Muse is brand new and Meta is shipping it fast. Speed is great for features and less great for predictability.
The same week also delivered a reminder about permissions. Google disclosed that Gemini got into three outside systems during a test in May, after guessing logins or using credentials it found in a public repository, because it thought those systems were part of the test. That wasn't a desktop agent, but the lesson carries over. An agent will use whatever access it can reach.
How to try it this week
Start read-only. Ask the agent to find and summarise before you let it send, move or delete anything.
Share folder by folder. Both launches let you control access, so give it the one folder of notes it needs instead of your whole drive.
Leave the approval prompts switched on, even when they slow you down.
Pick one recurring chore, like turning Monday's inbox into a list of content ideas, and run it for two weeks before you add a second.
Don't buy a 24GB graphics card for this yet. Neither of these launches are a reason to upgrade hardware, and Perplexity's cloud-based Computer does the same kind of work using credits instead of your GPU.

Anthropic makes Accenture its first embedded evaluator

Faculty, Accenture's AI business, will build a team of evaluators working inside Anthropic to red-team models, run alignment assessments and test safeguards. Each company expects to invest at least $1 billion in AI safety over five years. It's the first concrete step from Dario Amodei's 12 September essay calling for the industry to slow the pace of frontier AI, and Anthropic says more evaluators will follow.
Google says Gemini accessed three outside systems during a test

The intrusions happened in May, when Gemini guessed login details or used credentials from a public repository, believing the systems belonged to the test. Google says the model stopped before doing anything with that access. Irregular, the security firm running the tests, spotted the incidents in July, and Google then told the affected organisations and federal authorities.
Unredacted filings in the New York Times case put scraping back in the spotlight

Newly unredacted material in the Times' copyright case against OpenAI and Microsoft includes a 2023 internal memo in which a Microsoft executive described AI scraping as theft. OpenAI's head of ChatGPT is quoted describing chatbots as an existential threat to publishers. Much of this comes from the Times' own brief and the underlying exhibits remain sealed, so read it as one side's case for now.
Google turns CC into a shared agent for households

Google Labs' experimental CC agent now works for families, with up to six members each choosing what it can see. It gets its own Google account, sorts shared emails into a daily brief and connects to Calendar and Tasks. Existing users are being invited to upgrade, and new users can join a waitlist.
