What is a marketing engineer? The new AI role, explained for small teams

Profound named the role in April 2026. Here is what a marketing engineer builds, what the job pays, and what a small team can copy this week.

TL;DR

  • A marketing engineer is a marketer who builds and maintains the AI agents, automations, and data plumbing the rest of the marketing team runs its work through.
  • Profound announced the title on 8 April 2026, and US postings for the role now list pay between $132,000 and $242,000 a year.
  • The role sits between marketing ops, which keeps the infrastructure running, and growth engineering, which works inside the product.
  • Content engineering is the content-shaped slice of the same job, and it's the sensible place for a small team to start.
  • You don't need the hire to get the payoff: pick one repeated job, write the rules down, build the smallest version, and keep a person on approval.

Marketing gets a new job title every few years, and plenty of them are old jobs in a new hoodie. This one describes work that wasn't possible two years ago: one marketer building agents that watch competitors, draft content, and report back while the rest of the team sleeps.

Below is what a marketing engineer does, what the role pays, how it compares with marketing ops, GTM engineers, and content engineers, and how a founder or a team of two gets the same output without hiring one.

What is a marketing engineer?

A marketing engineer is a marketer who builds the systems a marketing team runs on, then keeps them working. The job has two halves: automating the work marketers already do, then building marketing that wasn't possible two years ago. The first half buys back time. The second half is where the "engineer" in the title earns its keep.

The title is brand new. Profound launched the role at its Zero Click conference in San Francisco on 8 April 2026, in front of more than 750 marketing leaders, along with a course to certify people in it.

One naming trap to watch for. "Marketing engineering" is also the name of an older academic field, and a technical marketing engineer is a long-standing role that explains a technical product to engineers through demos and tutorials. This post is about the new builder role.

What does a marketing engineer do day to day?

They find a job the team repeats, build an agent or workflow for it, and keep a person accountable for what comes out. The builds are unglamorous and very specific.

Typical examples include a competitor agent that monitors your top 15 competitors and drafts new talk tracks and a social post when one changes its pricing, and a review agent that spots happy users in usage data and sales calls, then asks them for a review. Another turns every recorded webinar into an article written for AI search and refreshes it with fresh data every month.

We run a small version of this on contengi.com. A scheduled agent reads our Search Console three times a week, picks the posts worth refreshing, checks every source it cites, and logs each change with a baseline so a later run can judge whether it helped. That log is the part I'd copy first. An agent that can't tell you whether its last change worked is just a faster way to guess.

How much does a marketing engineer earn?

In the US, builder-style marketing engineering roles list between $132,000 and $242,000 a year. These are live postings on the marketing engineering job board in November 2026:

RoleCompanyListed pay per year
Marketing EngineerProfound$135,000 to $200,000
Forward Deployed Marketing EngineerProfound$149,000 to $155,000
Forward Deployed AI Accelerator, MarketingStripe$132,000 to $198,000
AI Marketing Technologist LeadPlaid$170,000 to $223,000
Growth Platform, Marketing EngineerFaire$176,000 to $242,000

The coding bar varies a lot. Postings range from no code required, through Python or JavaScript for data pipelines and APIs, up to shipping production software with engineering code review. Those salaries explain why the title spread so fast. They also explain why a five-person company won't be hiring one this year.

Marketing engineer vs marketing ops vs GTM engineer vs content engineer

These roles overlap, especially in small companies, so it helps to look at what each one owns.

RoleWhat they ownWhere they sit
Marketing opsThe CRM, data, tracking, and the rules for using themMarketing, as the enabling layer
Marketing engineerThe agents and automations the marketing team runs its work throughInside marketing
GTM engineerThe outbound sales stackSales and go-to-market
Growth engineerExperiments and growth loops in the productProduct and engineering
Content engineerThe systems that research, write, publish, and refresh contentThe content team

Marketing ops keeps the infrastructure running, and marketing engineering uses that infrastructure to invent new ways of marketing. Growth engineers work closer to the product and run experiments in the codebase, while marketing engineers stay inside marketing.

The content engineer is the same instinct pointed at one channel. If you already know how a content engineer differs from a content strategist, you already understand half of the marketing engineer's job.

Do you need to hire a marketing engineer?

If you run a marketing team of 20, probably. If you're a founder or a team of two people who's week is already spoken for, you need the systems a marketing engineer would build, and you can get most of them without the salary.

Think of it like buying a dishwasher. You still decide what counts as clean, you just stop scrubbing every plate by hand. Content is the obvious first plate, because it's the job a small team repeats most. Once it runs, the same approach carries over to the other jobs that suit AI agents for marketing.

Contengi was built for that starting point. It keeps your brand strategy, voice, and hard rules in a knowledge base every agent reads before it writes, and runs recurring content jobs you describe in plain English, on a schedule, with approval gates where you want a say. It's the content engineering platform version of the role, set up with you instead of hired.

How to start thinking like a marketing engineer this week

  1. Pick one job you repeat every week. The weekly report, the newsletter, or the blog post that follows every webinar.
  2. Write the rules down before you automate anything. Brand voice, banned phrases, approved sources, and who signs off. An agent with no rules produces confident slop at speed.
  3. Build the smallest version that works. One trigger, one output, one human check before anything goes live.
  4. Keep a log with a baseline. Record what the system changed and the number before it changed, so you can tell whether it helped.
  5. Score it on what ships. Agents live, time saved each week, output quality, and the manual jobs the team stopped doing are the numbers worth tracking.
  6. Then pick the next job. The second build is always faster, because the rules and the log already exist.

If you'd like to see the content side running on your own brand, join the beta or request a demo.

Frequently asked questions

What is a marketing engineer?

A marketing engineer is a marketer who builds and maintains the AI agents, automations, and data systems a marketing team runs on. Profound launched the title in April 2026, and roles like it now appear on job postings at Stripe, Plaid, and Faire.

What does a marketing engineer do?

They find repeated marketing work and turn it into systems: competitor monitoring agents, review request agents, content pipelines that turn webinars into articles, and reporting that pings the team when something changes. A person still approves what goes out.

How much does a marketing engineer make?

Live US postings in November 2026 list between $132,000 and $242,000 a year for builder-style roles, with Profound's own marketing engineer role at $135,000 to $200,000.

Do marketing engineers need to code?

Not always. Some postings ask for no code at all, others want Python or JavaScript for APIs and data pipelines, and a few expect production software. Workflow tools and AI coding assistants mean plenty of marketers can start without a computer science degree.

What is the difference between a marketing engineer and a content engineer?

A marketing engineer builds systems across every marketing channel, from lifecycle to competitor monitoring. A content engineer focuses on the systems that research, write, publish, and refresh content, which makes it the natural first step for a small team.
