TL;DR

  • The best SEO tools for Google AI Mode in 2026 are Contengi for the content, Google Search Console for your own AI Mode impressions, and Semrush or Ahrefs for tracking prompts, with Clearscope for writing around query fan-out.
  • Search Console's generative AI performance report is free, covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, and reached every website on 31 August 2026.
  • Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit costs $99 a month and tracks prompts in Google AI Mode and ChatGPT.
  • Ahrefs Brand Radar tracks AI Mode alongside five other AI surfaces, with Custom Prompts from $50 a month and the AI Visibility Index at $199 a month.
  • AI Mode runs on Google's core ranking systems, so crawlable pages, clear structure, and first-hand content still do the heavy lifting, and no special file or markup is needed.

Google AI Mode works like a personal shopper. You ask one question, it nips off to a dozen shops at once, and it comes back with a tidy answer and a few receipts. Your job is to be one of the shops it visits, and to have something on the shelf worth bringing back.

Below are five tools that help with that, from writing the page to checking whether AI Mode shows it. We built Contengi, so it goes first, and each of the others is a strong pick for something we don't do. The rest are in no specific order.

Do you need special tools for Google AI Mode?

You need fewer than the market suggests. AI Mode is rooted in Google's core Search ranking and quality systems and uses query fan-out to run related searches in parallel, and Google Search ignores llms.txt and other AI-only files. Structured data isn't required either, though it still helps with rich results.

Two things change. A page has to be indexed, eligible for a snippet, and included in Search generative AI features in Search Console. And measurement moves from rankings to impressions inside the answer, which is where the tools below earn their keep. No third-party tool has access to Google's internal ranking or AI systems, so treat any that promise a ranking with suspicion. The overlap between GEO and SEO is bigger than the hype implies.

1. Contengi: best for when you want the pages AI Mode cites written and kept fresh

Contengi is an agentic content platform for small teams. It holds your brand knowledge base, researches what currently ranks, writes on-brand articles with FAQs and SEO fields, and publishes to WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Framer, or a site built with Claude or v0. The marketing assistant reads your Search Console data, so refresh plans start from pages that are slipping.

Before any of that, run a page through the free AI bot view to see what a crawler gets from the raw HTML. Contengi's LLM tracking checks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity, and it doesn't track Google AI Mode, so pair it with one of the trackers below. Pricing is from $50 a month with no seats, plus your own Anthropic key, and it's in beta.

Choose it if your bottleneck is producing and updating good pages, and you'll measure AI Mode elsewhere.

2. Google Search Console: best for when you want AI Mode data straight from Google

This is the one tool on the list with Google's own numbers. The generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, country, device, or date, with an export button. It rolled out to every website worldwide on 31 August 2026.

An impression here is each time a link to your site showed in an AI answer, so you finally see which pages AI Mode picks. Search Labs experiments are left out.

Choose it if you want free AI Mode data from the source, which make it the first thing to open this week.

3. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: best for when you want to watch specific prompts in AI Mode

Semrush keeps this toolkit focused on two answer engines. Prompt Tracking monitors Google AI Mode and ChatGPT, and the Brand Performance reports run common queries through both, then score how your brand is described and suggest fixes.

It costs $99 a month as a standalone subscription. Each user in a corporate account needs their own seat for it, so budget per person.

Choose it if you already work in Semrush and want AI Mode prompt tracking next to your keyword data.

4. Ahrefs Brand Radar: best for when you want to see who AI Mode names in your market

Brand Radar is the widest lens here. Its AI Visibility Index runs more than 512 million prompts across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot, so you can benchmark any brand with no setup. It also tracks which short Google searches trigger an AI Mode answer, and whether you appear in it.

Custom Prompts start at $50 a month, and every paid Ahrefs plan from Lite up includes a small daily quota. The AI Visibility Index costs $199 a month, and Bot Analytics, which shows AI crawlers visiting your pages, is free while in beta.

Choose it if you want competitor share of voice in AI Mode, and you're happy to pay for the bigger dataset.

5. Clearscope: best for when you want to write for the searches AI Mode runs behind the scenes

Query fan-out means AI Mode answers your question by running several related searches. Clearscope's query fan-out awareness shows the web searches AI platforms trigger, which turns into a list of side questions your page should answer too.

Essentials costs $129 a month with unlimited users and a 14-day free trial. Its query tracking covers ChatGPT and Gemini, so use Search Console or one of the trackers above for AI Mode itself.

Choose it if you write long guides and want them to cover the questions AI Mode asks on your reader's behalf.

How to get ready for AI Mode this week

  1. Open the generative AI performance report in Search Console and export your top 20 pages by AI impressions.
  2. Check you're included in Search generative AI features in Search Console, since an excluded site never shows.
  3. Scan your top pages with the AI bot view to confirm the content is in the HTML and crawlers can get in.
  4. Rewrite the opening of each key section so the answer comes in the first two sentences, then run it through the AI slop cleaner before it goes live.
  5. Add one first-hand detail per page, like a number from your own data or a mistake you made, because summaries of page one are easy to replace.
  6. Track 10 buyer prompts in one AI Mode tracker for a month before buying a bigger plan.

The habit underneath all of this is plain answer engine optimisation: write the clearest answer, prove you've done the thing, and keep the page current.
