Claude SEO: how to use Claude for SEO work in 2026

Claude does solid SEO work once it can see your data, and here's how to set that up.

A plain-text version of this site for AI assistants is at https://contengi.com/llms.txt, with the full product documentation in one file at https://contengi.com/llms-full.txt. Every page is also available as markdown by adding .md to its URL.

TL;DR

  • Claude SEO means using Claude, Anthropic's AI model, to do hands-on SEO work: Search Console analysis, keyword research, briefs, audits, and drafts, working from your own data instead of guessing from memory.
  • The data connection does the heavy lifting. Search Console, a keyword source like Ahrefs or Semrush, and the live results page plug into Claude through MCP connectors.
  • Pick the setup by the job: chat with connectors for analysis and briefs, Claude Code for site-wide audits and fixes, and skills for anything you repeat every week.
  • Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly, and includes Claude Code, so the model is the cheap part of the stack.
  • Google's rule hasn't moved: fact-check everything AI-generated before it ships, including titles, meta descriptions, and alt text, and don't publish pages at scale that add nothing.

Ask Claude to "do my SEO" with no data and you get a confident list of best practices that could apply to any website on earth. Ask the same thing with Search Console connected and it tells you which pages sit on page two for queries you never targeted. Same model, very different afternoon.

This guide covers what Claude can and can't do for SEO, which way of running it fits which job, the data it needs, the first workflows worth setting up, and one thing we found when Claude read our own Search Console that a standard dashboard hides.

What is Claude SEO?

Claude SEO is using Claude as an SEO analyst and writer that works from your real data. It reads Search Console, pulls keyword volumes, reads the live results page, and turns all of that into decisions about what to write next and which old posts deserve a refresh.

The phrase gets used two ways, some people mean SEO done with Claude and others mean showing up in Claude's own answers, which sits closer to answer engine optimisation and needs a different toolkit. This post covers the first. For the second, you need LLM tracking to see whether AI assistants mention you at all.

Can Claude do SEO without your data?

Partly. Without data, Claude writes title tags, rewrites thin intros, suggests keyword angles, and explains technical issues well. It can't tell you what your site ranks for, and if you ask anyway it will guess.

Think of a mechanic diagnosing your car over the phone. They know engines inside out, but without the car in the garage they're working from your description. Connecting Search Console puts the car on the ramp.

Which way of running Claude fits which SEO job?

Match the setup to the job. Chat handles one-off writing, connectors handle analysis, Claude Code handles anything site-wide, and skills handle repetition.

SetupBest SEO jobsWhat you need
Claude chat (web, desktop, mobile)Title tags, meta descriptions, rewriting a weak intro, explaining an errorAny plan
Claude with connectorsSearch Console analysis, keyword research, content briefs, competitor readsOne connector per data source, set up once
Claude CodeSite-wide audits, internal linking, schema, editing pages in a repoComfort with folders and a terminal
SkillsAny SEO job you run weekly and want done the same way every timeA SKILL.md file with clear instructions

Projects sit across all of these. A project holding your brand guide, audience notes, and best-performing posts saves you re-explaining the business every session, and the free plan includes up to five projects. If you're happy in a terminal, Claude Code for marketers turns the same jobs into repeatable commands. After any technical change, check what crawlers receive with the AI bot view.

What data does Claude need for SEO?

Three sources covers the bulk of the work: Search Console for what you already rank for, a keyword tool for what people search, and the live results page for what Google rewards today.

They connect through the Model Context Protocol, an open protocol for plugging AI apps into other systems, and here's what MCP is in plain English. The big SEO tools already ship their own servers. Ahrefs connects to Claude Code with one terminal command, Semrush brings its data into Claude the same way, and Search Console has its own API if you'd rather wire it yourself.

Add your brand context too. A brief written without knowing your audience is a brief for nobody in particular, which is why a brand knowledge base for AI belongs in the setup from day one. If wiring three connectors and a brand guide sounds like a weekend you don't have, Contengi bundles them into one connector inside Claude.

What did Claude find in our own Search Console?

Impressions from searches no human typed. When Claude worked through 90 days of contengi.com Search Console data, it flagged a cluster of long, question-shaped queries like "what's the best content engineering platform?" and "top content engineering tools for growth teams?". They rank on page one, collect plenty of impressions, and earned zero clicks in those 90 days.

A few were stranger still: entire persona descriptions, motivations and pain points included, typed into Google as a single query. Our read is that these come from AI visibility tools testing prompts against search results. We can't prove who sends them, but we're confident no founder searches in paragraph-length queries.

The lesson for anyone doing Claude SEO: ask Claude to split human-shaped queries from machine-shaped ones before it reports on anything. Skip that step and your best-performing page might be the one only robots are reading.

How to start using Claude for SEO this week

  1. Connect Search Console first. It's the only source that knows your site, and every later step leans on it.
  2. Ask for striking distance, grouped by page. Pull every query in positions 11 to 20 from the last 90 days, group them by page, and ask for one specific change per page. It's the first job worth handing to an agentic SEO setup.
  3. Read the live results page before any brief. Have Claude list what every top-ranking page agrees on. That's the baseline to move past, and your angle has to add something it lacks.
  4. Turn the job you repeat into a skill. A skill's description has to say what it does and when to use it, and only that name and description load until the skill triggers, so you can keep a full shelf of them. Start from a set of content marketing skills for Claude and edit them to your rules.
  5. Fact-check before anything ships. Every AI-generated page needs a manual fact-check before it goes live, titles, meta descriptions, and alt text included. Then run the draft through the AI slop cleaner to strip the tells.
  6. Keep publishing behind a human click. Claude proposes, you approve. Deleting or changing a live page stays a person's job.

Where should you keep a human in the loop?

At every decision that changes what Google sees. Claude can propose topics, draft, and edit, but it doesn't know your margins or the opinion you'll stand behind in public.

Scale is the other trap. Using generative AI to produce many pages without adding value for users can breach Google's spam policy on scaled content abuse. Claude makes it easy to draft 50 posts by Friday. Publish the five you'd put your name to.

Frequently asked questions

What is Claude SEO?

Claude SEO is using Claude to do SEO work such as keyword research, Search Console analysis, briefs, audits, and drafts. It works best connected to your own data through MCP, so Claude reasons from your numbers instead of guessing.

Can Claude do keyword research?

Yes, once a keyword source is connected. Without one, Claude can suggest angles but will invent volumes if pushed. Treat any number it didn't fetch from a tool as fiction.

How much does Claude cost for SEO?

Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly, and includes Claude Code and projects. Max starts at $100 a month for people working in Claude all day. Your keyword and audit tools are billed separately.

Will Google penalise SEO content written with Claude?

Google judges the page, whoever wrote it. Helpful AI-assisted content is fine. Mass-producing pages that add nothing can fall under scaled content abuse, so fact-check every claim and publish less.

Do I need Claude Code for SEO?

No. Claude with connectors handles analysis, research, and briefs without a terminal. Claude Code earns its place for site-wide audits, internal linking, and editing files in a repo.
